Society of Architectural Historians Regional Conference
Thursday October 2nd through Saturday October 4th.

Historic Tacoma is proud to host the Pacific Northwest Regional Society of Architectural Historians annual conference. A walking tour, open to the public, and a tour of a modernist home, open to Historic Tacoma members only, will be featured.

Join us to visit the “House of Tomorrow” designed by exhibit designer and sometime architect, Bert Smyser.  Smyser began his career as a window dresser for the Kennedy Brothers Arcade in downtown Tacoma.  His talents were quickly recognized and eventually he opened his own business, Smyser Display Services Inc.  Among his more noteworthy projects was the construction and development of the State of Washington’s displays for the 1939-1940 New York World’s Fair and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco.  Smyser’s best known project however might be the Coffee Pot Restaurant (Bob’s Java Jive) constructed on Highway 99 in 1929.  Other projects in the Tacoma area included a motel and two grand Exposition Halls one if Fife and one in Tacoma (Tacoma Soccer Center).

This Streamline Moderne house is currently for sale allowing the opportunity to again view this “Home of Tomorrow”.

Lectures start at 7pm at the Knights of Pythias Hall, 926 1/2 Broadway
$5 a ticket for Historic Tacoma members - $8 a ticket for the general public

Salvage: Recycle! Where to find those great period details (woodwork, doors, windows, hardware, even lighting!) that were removed from your house. Representatives from Seattle Architectural Salvage, the RE Store, Second Use, and Olympia Salvage will be on hand to talk about the ultimate in historic recycling.

Thursday April 17th.

Systems: Vintage & Energy Efficient? You Bet! Learn how to address HVAC, insulation, plumbing and windows. Experts from Phase II Construction, York Enterprises Construction, At Your Service Plumbing, Legacy Windows, Allied Windows, BearWood Windows, and the City of Tacoma will show you how.

Thursday April 24th.

Style: Eco-Friendly & Period Appropriate: Learn how to recreate period appropriate details with eco-friendly products. Representatives from EcoHaus and Cartozian will be on hand to discuss earth friendly paints, waxes, counter-top materials, all natural wool rugs, cork flooring, and the original enviro-friendly flooring Linoleum. Also, Ballard Furniture Spa will discuss eco-friendly paint removal services for restoring painted trim and vintage furniture.

Reuben McKnight, City of Tacoma Historic Preservation Officer and members of the Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission will describe what it takes to get your property on the Tacoma Register, the Secretary of the Interior's standards for the treatment of historic properties, the design review process, and financial incentives for property owners and developers.
